Order Description
1. Read “Fire in the Hole” and watch the film version (Season One, Episode One of Justified) in its entirety.

2. Choose one scene in the film version of “Fire in the Hole” that also appears in the book in some fashion (i.e., the scene in the movie can be a loose translation of a scene from the book). You may also choose to analyze the way the book vs. the film begins or ends, focusing on specific images or dialogue. Using the tools you have learned in Film Studies, and including at least five key terms from Film Studies in bold, write a 500-word (minimum) discussion post answering the following questions:

• What are the notable elements of the scene in the book? In the movie?

• How are the two scenes (book vs. movie version) similar? How are they different?

• Which version of the scene (book vs. movie version) is more successful, and why? What would you have changed if you were directing the film?

• Do both scenes (book vs. movie version) carry the same meanings and messages? The same primary focus?

• How does Justified engage with (or distance itself from) the themes and politics of coal mining?

• What is the final message (if any) about coal mining in “Fire in the Hole” and/or Justified
